Testing Strategy
The College’s Operations Planning Group has developed a substantial testing strategy that is backed by guidance from public health and infectious disease experts. The College tests all students upon arrival to identify asymptomatic cases and to assess the percent of positive cases within the community; students remain quarantined upon arrival on campus until the first day of classes, to limit spread from any asymptomatic cases. We will also test all students monthly: students are grouped into three cohorts, and one cohort will be tested roughly every 10 days.
As directed by health experts, the College emphasizes the critical importance of safety measures such as masking and physical distancing to limit transmission of any virus.
The College also tests all symptomatic students, their close contacts, and the close contacts of all asymptomatic students who test positive. The College will also test all faculty and staff who are regularly on campus and who volunteer to be tested, along with other identified asymptomatic groups as indicated. On average, the first waves of test results have been received in 24-36 hours.
The College’s Medical Team will be closely monitoring the campus and the testing landscape, and will adapt this approach to testing as needed. We have developed relationships with outside vendors and are developing our own testing capabilities.
The Operations Planning Group uses testing to monitor the effectiveness of our prevention efforts, which are our focus. Prevention strategies include checking symptoms and staying home as needed, wearing a mask, maintaining at least six feet of distance from others, washing hands and surfaces frequently, and noting any close contacts. Read more about the College's prevention strategies in the Campus Guide.
Addressing Positive Cases
Residential students who test positive will be moved to a dorm designated for COVID-positive cases. They will be able to call a nurse for urgent issues at all times, and Health and Wellness Center staff will check on them via phone each day. They may also be seen in person by medical professionals as needed. All meals will be delivered from Dining Services with contactless delivery. The dorm will be cleaned by an outside firm with special training. Commuting students, faculty, and staff will isolate in their homes. Students will be paid up to 70 hours for work-study that cannot be completed due to illness. Staff and faculty will be paid for quarantine time as well as sick days.
Those who test positive will share a list of any close contacts -- those who have been within six feet for longer than 15 minutes -- with Bryn Mawr and Montgomery County's public health officers. Any close contacts in the Bryn Mawr College community will be alerted and testing plans confirmed.
